Demineralised Water is also known as Deionised Water, De-min Water or DI Water. This type of very ‘pure’ water is produced by means of a demineralisation or deionisation plant.
This system of purification removes mineral salts, ions and other impurities by passing the feed water through a resin bed. Such impurities can cause limescale and residues which may damage sensitive equipment or interfere with the accuracy of chemical analysis.
There are many uses of Demineralised Water including:
LABORATORY ANALYSIS AND EQUIPMENT
High quality water is required for almost all analytical methods so that the results are accurate. Demineralised Water is widely used in laboratory analysis, in autoclaves and in chemical testing.
THE AUTOMATIVE INDUSTRY
De-min Water is routinely used to ‘top up’ lead-acid type batteries in the car and truck industries because the positive and negative ions found in tap water will greatly reduce the lifespan of a battery. Demineralised Water is also used in the cooling systems of cars and trucks.
THE COSMETICS INDUSTRY
Many cosmetics and beauty products contain water. When the word ‘aqua’ appears on the list of ingredients this usually denotes the use of Demineralised Water as tap water contains potentially harmful contaminants.
Industrial and domestic humidifiers generally require the use of Deionised Water to reduce the build-up of mineral limescale.
Demineralised Water is often recommended for use in steam irons as the mineral salts present in tap water can cause limescale which can ‘clog up’ the steam vents. Some manufacturers now say that tap water is safe to use in their steam irons.
